these kids are absolutely hilarious. on friday i did a little "halloween/harvest festival" preparation for today's festivities. we colored and decorated jack-o-lanterns. they loved it! ryan (on the far left) joined the class on friday and today to see if he was able to handle the level. we were on a trial run, but i had to tell mrs. kim after today that his writing and listening comprehension levels are too low. and, of course, he barely spoke a word. the fact that i am a foreigner and i'm spouting very foreign words can be incredibly daunting to a little one.
with clara as a new addition in the class, the amount of chatter has escalated - and it's usually in korean - so keeping their attention has been much more of a challenge. i have also noticed that dennis has been mean to the other students, but since the comments are in korean, i don't know what he's saying. trust the little ones to be tattle-tales, though! usually i hear immediately afterwards from one of the other kids: "miss ruth, he - he - dennis says i-i'm bad." "miss ruth, dennis, he hit me." as the childish violence has escalated (lol) i've begun trying to curb the amount of under-the-breath insults and whacks. in the past week i've taken to writing classroom rules on the board. you know, basic rules:
1) Sit in your seat.
2) Be quiet!
3) Raise your hand.
4) Speak only in English.
5) Be kind and polite (i.e. keep all hands and feet to yourself and stop being MEAN.)
overall, i think they're adjusting well, and it's beginning to function almost like a normal 1st grade class. almost. LOL
