Bittersweet Goodbyes

Three and a half years ago, Jody and I first moved to Colorado and began to prepare for the arduous task of completing a degree at Denver Seminary. And though I was born in Colorado and spent the first few years of my life here, it is a completely different experience as an adult, forging your own way 'in the world' and establishing lasting friendships out of nothing.

We moved to Littleton after returning to the States from Korea, spending two months with my family in Virginia and two months with Jo's family in Texas. It was so nice to finally settle down. I changed my name officially to 'Been,' updated my license to an official Colorado one, got our plates registered. Every little piece made us feel more at home. Still, we knew no one. No church home. No connections other than my parents' friends from when they lived here back in the 70s and 80s.

After using the first few weeks of our time in Colorado to adjust, it was time for Jo to get everything prepared for his first semester of graduate school. He registered for classes and got his books. The next step to preparing for school was to attend the New Student Orientation.

The day of, we drove to the seminary, parked and walked into the building that houses the chapel. There were round tables throughout the room, and so we picked our seats off to the southern side and began to chat with those around us. Then we noticed a couple walk in, and there wasn't a place for them to sit at any of the tables.

I remember it - as clear as day. "Hey, come join us!" Jody and I urged them.

We pulled up a few chairs next to us, and they sat down.

Three and a half years later, I miss them like crazy.

Sam and Britt became our buds all through seminary. California natives, from Day #1 I knew they would be returning to their beloved state. I just knew it was inevitable. But I still am so thankful for the time that we had together!

Their wiener dog Rustie convinced me that I wanted a miniature dachshund for myself. They went with us out to the home in Elizabeth where we picked up Eu-mi as an 8 week old pup from a litter of eight.

We had doggie play dates.

Worked out together.

Ate meals together composed of whatever was in our refrigerators at the time.

"You have carrots? Oh, great! I'll bring the lettuce and tomatoes."

"Game night? Sweet! I'll bring Settlers. Wanna bake some of your amazing cookies?"

We discussed the stresses of seminary together. Its' effect on our health, our marriages, our finances. Oh, what a blessing to have someone who could relate!

We played outside together... had snowball fights. Went biking in the mountains.

When they got another pup, Roxy, Jo and I decided that we'd need to get another wiener dog, too! I mean, imagine the play dates with not two - BUT FOUR - wiener dogs!

Yup! All 4 of them!
Even when Britt and I were working, Sam and Jo were always up to some mischief. Brewing beer. Debating Calvinism vs. Arminianism. Talking about life in ministry.

When Jo graduated in December, Sam and Britt were there to celebrate with us.

It just wouldn't have been the same without them.

I used to think that 'bosom friends' (as Anne Shirley puts it) were impossible to find. Now I know that they're not impossible to find... but they are rare and to be treasured.

Sam got a job at a church in northern California, and they moved last month. Before they left, they came over and dropped off all the food in their pantry.

Because that's what friends do.

We got take-out Panda Express, sat in the living room and talked about the future. And how they need to find us a job in California, so we can keep hanging out.

Dear Parsons,
We are so grateful for you guys.
We miss and love you so much, and we pray God's blessings on your lives.
Keep a room open for us in Cali! We just might have to come visit!!
Love,
The Beens

Graduation

It finally arrived.

This past Monday, December 12, 2011, after much blood, sweat and tears my awesome husband Jody graduated from Denver Seminary with his Masters of Arts (MA) in Leadership. I am so very proud of him!

The weekend started off very well, with a great surprise. Six weeks before graduation weekend, I got an unexpected call from Jody's best friend Dustin. He asked if he could fly up to be present for Jody's graduation. I was speechless for a moment but recovered myself enough to say, "Why absolutely! Jody would be thrilled to have you here!"

So Dustin bought his tickets, got his rental car... and we didn't really talk for a while. But when we were driving back from Pampa after Thanksgiving, Jody told me that he didn't want anyone coming to celebrate his graduation with him since he had SO MUCH work to do, and his final presentation wasn't until the Wednesday AFTER the Monday graduation. I started panicking, knowing that Dustin had already booked his flights. I got to madly thinking that maybe I should tell Dustin to cancel... but I didn't want to back down. So I responded by telling him that I really felt like he needed to get as much of his work done as he possibly could.

He was not happy. If it could have been possible, smoke would have been pouring out of his ears. He didn't say anything... other than that he was not happy.

So, fast forward a few weeks. It's Friday evening, and Jody and I are sitting down, eating dinner and chatting. His cell phone rings. He glances at it and turns it off, since he wants to focus on our time together. Then there is a knock at the door. Jody gets up, goes to the door and opens it. He looks at Dustin. He looks at me. He looks at Dustin again. Not a word. Just a confused look, as if his brain had shut down.

Surprise!

So that begin three whole days that the guys got to hang out together.

So proud!

With Dustin

Best friends!

With dear friends, Sam and Britt, who came to support us!

And on Monday, Jody graduated from Denver Seminary. Praise the Lord!

I love Jackie!

A few weeks ago, my wonderful childhood friend, Jackie came to visit Jody and me for a quick weekend.  Jackie and I have been friends since Missionettes at WEAG (oh, around age 7 or 8). We went to Youth Group together, caught up after college and have stayed in touch ever since. Now Jackie is about to join her hubby in Edinburgh, Scotland while he works on his PhD. I am so excited for the adventures God has in store for them, and I'm praying we can go visit (!!!) them!!!

Jackie's visit was short (too short!), but I treasure it nonetheless, knowing that it's hard these days to be in the same place as those I love most in this life. For the detailed story of our fun times, visit Jackie's awesome blog for her post:  KELLY LYFE: colorado

I love you, Jackie, and I pray God leads and guides you in this new phase in life!

BONNIE!

The longer I live, the more I realize that true friendships are rare. They're not as rare as I thought they were when I was younger, but they are nonetheless rare and to be treasured. This summer marked a big milestone in one of my friendships. I met Bonnie my freshman year at William & Mary. It was 2001, and we both lived in Barrett - the all-girls freshman dorm.

During the course of the 3 1/2 years I spent at WM, my relationship with Bonnie grew exponentially, and I can honestly say she is one of my dearest friends. We have maintained that friendship through my time in Korea, my getting married, her moving to Santa Barbara to start her PhD program at UC-Santa Barbara in Economics, and all the life that happens in your twenties post-college.

The most remarkable part of our friendship is that we haven't seen each other since August 2006. It's been five years... and when Bonnie came to visit Jody and me, it was like no time had passed. She is the same dear, dear friend whom I love and treasure. I am so thankful for her and so proud of her! Bonnie, thank you for coming to visit us, and I'm so glad you finally got to meet Jody!

We played Settlers of Catan (and I won BOTH TIMES! Heh heh!), and Bonnie made the most amazing key lime pie for Jody for his birthday. It was awesome. Bonnie, you ROCK!

We celebrated Jody's birthday (and gave Bonnie a glimpse of the beautiful Rocky Mountains) by going on a hike. I loved showing her the beautiful aspens!

We had to get a group shot!

So this is what a 10 year friendship looks like. I love you, Bonnie. Thanks for being my friend.

sometimes i just have a hankerin'...

for korean nummies! so our spiritual formation group meets on mondays, and here we are! the henkles and us switch every other monday, hosting our group time, and on this occasion jody and i decided to go 'all out' and get a few korean food items at the H-Mart in aurora so that our dinner was completely korean from start to finish. it was so much fun!

we had spicy ramen - complete with the egg and slice of cheese on top, kimchi, kim (seaweed), the yellow radishes, sticky rice, the pounded fish bread (i don't know what it's called exactly) and bean sprouts. we even had the maxim coffee mix and ice cream from korea to wrap up the meal. it was SOOO much fun!

part of the fun is, as always, exposing friends to a new type of food. the ramen is pretty safe, of course, but the side dishes are what provide the greatest mystery to american friends. it's more fun to take a friend to a korean restaurant, but i thought we did a pretty good job! and jesse and rachel seemed to enjoy it all. haha. i am thankful for their willingness to experiment and humor us. :)

having jesse and rachel in our lives has been such a blessing. finding friends, and i mean true 'kindred spirits' has been harder than i'd like to admit in this season. i think part of it is... we're grown ups now, and free time is harder to come by. i think part of it is also that we're in the crunch time of seminary. jody has one more semester after this one, and he is consumed with school assignments and his job at the church. amidst it all, however, the Lord has been so kind to us in providing like-minded friends in jesse and rachel. we are so grateful. i pray that no matter where the Lord takes us, our friendship will last.

Stef's Visit

Last week was a very exciting time, because my dear friend, Stefanie came to visit me and Jody. Now why is Stefanie so special, do you ask? Stefanie is special for more reasons that I can think of, but the first that comes to mind is that Stefanie has seen me struggle over several years and she still loves me. Stefanie was one of my first friends in Korea. We met in early 2006 at an English ministry of a large church in Migeum station, about 15 minutes drive from Suji, where we both lived.

As I thought about our history, I realized we have been through a lot together and kept in touch even when apart. (Move your mouse over the following paragraph, and you will be able to click on the links to see when I wrote about those experiences on this blog.)

We were friends when Korea was crazy over the World Cup. She encouraged me when I arrived back in Korea for my second year and cried like a baby in her and Brittany's apartment. She was there when Jody and I first met and became friends... and when we went hiking together... and the shirt I'm wearing for my first 'date' with Jody is hers.... Stefanie is also the first person I told when Jody had proposed... we were, after all, heading over to her apartment that Friday evening when Jo popped the question. :) Stefanie was a consolation during our Tuesday night Bible studies, where we confessed struggles, prayed for one another and encouraged each other to keep pressing on. She was there the day of our wedding... and back in Korea when we returned to Korea for my third year. She has celebrated Thanksgiving with me in Korea. She introduced us to Life Church, where we had community and developed wonderful friendships with amazing people. I praise God for Stefanie!

And so, last Tuesday, Stefanie came to Denver and visited Jody and me. Sadly, Jody received a jury summons - and was selected. So he was gone most of Stefanie's visit (bummer!!!), but nonetheless, we girls had a great time together. We ate Korean food together, took a walk to downtown Littleton, visited Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, and visited the Coors Brewery in Golden. It was a wonderful time together, and I praise God for faithful friends like Stef.

i love you, steffers!

October Snowfall

This past week it felt a little like Christmas here in Colorado. I found myself wanting to decorate the apartment and put in a CD of Christmas carols. Ha! Earlier on in the week, we began to hear reports of a potential blizzard, and on Tuesday night it began to snow. It didn't stop until Thursday afternoon... when we had two feet of light, perfect, fluffy snow. It was fantastic! Neither Jody or I have experienced this much snow in years. We felt like little kids and loved every minute of it. Sadly I had to inch my way to work on Wednesday, but thankfully I got Thursday as a snow day. It was fantastic to have an excuse just to play and rest! Jody also did not have classes at Denver Seminary on Thursday, so he missed a huge exam (which he has to make up this Thursday... of course).

Instead of humdrum work on our uber-special and unexpected vacation day, we ate pancakes and watched a movie, then we met up with Sam and Britt and went to the park to play in the snow. The boys threw the football, and we just took pictures, sat in the snow, made snow angels and just reveled in the beauty of it all. That evening Jody and I celebrated by buying 2 Little Caesar $5 pizzas and watched another movie! It was a fantastic day! ... And now... 3 days later, the snow has all but melted and it was 64 degrees today. Ahhh, I love Colorado weather. :)

The Duplers' Visit in Pictures

Wonderful friends from Korea, Marc and Jenny Dupler, came and visited us a little over a week ago. While it was a busy weekend, and both Jody and I were exhausted from September, it was a wonderful way to finish out the month: visiting with friends, talking about what we learned from our experiences in Korea, sharing the struggles of life after coming back from Korea, as well as just the struggles that come with following God in this life. I am very thankful for Marc and Jenny, because I know that they too are struggling and yet they are so joyful! It makes me think of the verse, "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." (Romans 12:12) That is what the Duplers are, and I am thankful for their example.

Interestingly enough, one thing Jenny loved so much during her visit was the grass here in Colorado. It was so green, she said! And I could not agree more. Jody and I love to go to the park near our apartment and just soak in the goodness of being outside.

Here are some pictures from their visit. Thanks to Jenny, for her amazing photography skills and her willingness to post these brilliant pictures.
