summer is flying by...

perhaps the hardest part of summer is that it doesn't stick around very long. after a grueling year of seminary and greater involvement in church, then moving in april, both jody and i were looking forward to a reprieve this summer - a chance to catch our breath, move a little slower and actually enjoy this beautiful state that we live in. sadly, that has not really been the case. it has been go-go-go this entire summer!

i would say that the greatest adjustment this summer has been truly understanding what it means to live right next door to the church. it has its' perks, for sure. since jody is working there, it is comforting to know that he's right next door and can come and go as he pleases. it makes it easier to run home and feed eu-mi or to let her out to potty. and it makes our sunday morning commute that much easier. :) but the hard part, we have found, is to keep a healthy balance between church involvement and family time. so many wonderful things are happening all the time, and it's just so hard to say 'no'!


one aspect of church life that jody and i have enjoyed has been greater involvement with the youth in our church. while we have never intended to become youth pastors or to play the cool card to get on their level, we see in the youth a need for Godly people within their church to invest in them, challenge them to a higher standard of holiness, and encourage them to truly reach for their God-given potential. this summer, a young man named joe came from chicago to do his youth internship with the englewood youth group. he has done

such a fantastic job, and this sunday will be his last, as he's heading back to finish up his senior year of college. for now, jody and i will be stepping in to take over the youth, and we're curious to see what God wants to do through us in this time. if you think of us, pray for us.

another exciting event that happened was my wonderful husband's birthday. i mentioned it in a previous post, but i think it's worth including in this summer post, as well. jody turned 30, and i think it was a big birthday for him - a marker in his life. i think he finally feels like he's not a 'youngin' anymore, and now he can be taken seriously. :) overall, i'm so proud of him, and i am so thankful for him in my life. i also feel that he's starting to see reasons for why God has led him on the path that He has. all the struggles and challenges truly are for a reason. happy 30th, my love!

i guess it's also worth mentioning that last month i got in a car accident. it was my first car accident ever, and it really scared me. i was driving home from work, and i got broadsided in my little red echo. i was able to drive home without a tow truck, but the echo was pretty badly damaged. we decided not to get it fixed, but to sell it instead. thankfully, this summer we have not needed a second car as much, because jody can walk next door to work, and beyond the 2 week power course he took the end of may, he hasn't needed to drive to denver seminary this summer. God is good. we are now currently looking for a second car, and we've enlisted the help of the same auto broker we bought the echo from. he and his wife are christians, we think, and so honest in their dealings, that we'd like to give them our business again. we'll let you know when we get one! look for pictures and updates.....

Happy Birthday, Jody!


I want to take a moment to honor my wonderful husband. On Friday, Jody turned 30 years old. It's a big birthday, I think, and there has been much time and thought put into what this birthday actually means. Haha. I think we've decided it means the end of childhood, for good. He's an adult now - with no more excuses for his ridiculous behavior. :)

For some reason, this birthday has also reminded me of the passage of time since I met him. Jody and I met in October 2006 at our friends' Stefanie and Brittany's apartment in South Korea. Almost 4 years ago... I was 23 years old, and he was 26. We met, started dating 2 months later, were engaged 3 months later, and married within 10 months of knowing each other. Not a situation I would recommend to the average couple, but for us, it was perfect. God's plan and timing for us was perfect, and I'm truly grateful that the Lord brought Jody into my life. He is the best man for me, and I see it now more than ever.


I am truly proud of Jo, and I marvel at what a godly man he is growing into. I pray the Lord continues to lead and guide him, and I cannot wait to see what else is in store for him in the years to come.

Father's Day Picnic

The summer is flying by. I'm trying to catch my breath and actually enjoy the season amidst it all. Last weekend was Father's Day. According to Jody, Father's Day isn't nearly as important to men as Mother's Day is to women, so it didn't seem to be a big deal. Nonetheless, it is a noteworthy holiday, and I wanted to stop for a moment and thank both my Heavenly Father and my earthly father for their incredible kindness towards me. God has indeed been good to me. I was so sad, too, because I could not be present to hug my dad and tell him I love him and how very much I appreciate his hard and faithful work to provide for my family.

I also wanted to highlight a few pictures from our church's Father's Day picnic. We went to Centennial Park and just chilled together following church. The weather was perfect - a bit cloudy and just the right temperature, and there were games to play, lots of food to eat, and more than enough people to chat and catch up with!

So a little over a week ago I returned to Korea after spending two weeks at home. It was a marvelous trip in all, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing family and friends and just being back in the good ol' US of A.

Whoever says that America sucks has probably not spent a year in Korea.

Now, when I say this, I mean it with no animosity towards Korea. I have met some amazing people here, and they have showered me with kindness and generosity. God has indeed been good to me here. He has taught me a lot about what it means to live overseas, and to operate in a country where I cannot speak the language, and where I stand out like a sore thumb. And even where (in their eyes) I am on the same level as Brooke Shields.

However, there are enough cultural differences to show you that you are not in Kansas anymore, and even though you have met Tinman and all sorts of wonderful people along the way, in the end, there really is no place like home.

And so now I am commencing on month 13 (of 18.5), and I am seeking God's plans for me in the next 6 months and what I'll be doing post-Korea... Prayers are appreciated!

respite in the mountains

as the year marches on, i find myself craving silence. silence from the noise of cars, silence from the garbage man picking up trash at 6am as i get ready for work, silence from the busyness of life. i am ready to spend time in the mountains again this summer.

saturday morning jody and i were able to get up in the mountains for a little bit, and it was just wonderful. we didn't go too far... just beyond the foothills and up around 7-8,000 feet. we went to an open space place called meyer ranch, that is private property and yet open for public use. it was absolutely beautiful.

one thing i noticed about this level in altitude is that this is where the aspens grow. usually i head immediately as high as i can get - up around 12 and 13,000 feet, preferably. but saturday showed me that i have been missing out on gorgeous aspen trees. have you ever been in a field with aspens when the wind blows? it is the most calming sound of rustling leaves that i have ever heard. it makes you want to stop and close your eyes and reach out to heaven, because surely the Lord must be speaking. :)

i had a wonderful time just walking... and watching eu-mi be her curious, mischievous self. how i love this dog! she has brought more laughter than i ever thought a mere animal could. i'm so thankful for her.


i am also thankful for this season, because except for one last paper for his two week summer class, jody is not taking classes until the fall semester. i am thrilled. as we discussed the pace at which jody would take classes down this home stretch (1/3 left to go), we decided that it would be wise to use the summer for him to focus on his job at englewood. there is great need for focused attention on the needs of the church, and i know that jody will be able to better serve the body and help tj (our lead pastor), by taking more of his load. so we are breathing a bit more slowly, and moving a little slower. and it's wonderful.

hello all. i just wanted to connect with you and let you know that jody and i are officially moved into our new place and gradually getting settled in. it has been a whirlwind of a couple of months, but we are hoping that with the end of the spring semester at denver seminary in the next few weeks that life will settle down enough to get everything in its' proper place at home.

really, the move went extremely well. i took off work last thursday and friday and so spent those days painting, vacuuming and moving in the kitchen, pantry and as many of the small items that i could. thankfully, nothing broke as i haphazardly threw dishes and pictures in boxes in the back of my car and drove through SNOW from the apartment over to the duplex. crazy colorado weather! anyway, saturday morning we rented a truck and had help from seminary and church friends (THANKS, GUYS!!!!!) to move all the big items. it took one trip and probably 3 and 1/2 hours to get it all moved in.

  1. we are now living in 1 place - not straddling 2 different places
  2. we have gotten to paint the place with fun colors and there is so much potential to fix the whole place up... a little at a time! (i'm already thinking... a few new light fixtures, landscaping the little front yard!!!!!)
  3. we have a second room that we are using as an office - for jody to get some quiet if he needs it.
  4. we are right next to the church... stressful commute, i know
  5. the change doesn't affect my commute to work at all (same amt of driving time)
  6. we get to reach out and love on some new neighbors in englewood. pray for breakthroughs for us!
  7. we are closer to the House of Prayer Englewood (HOPE), where God is doing good stuff in uniting the Body of Christ in englewood.
  8. there is a small backyard.... i am excited about getting the englewood youth over for BBQs.
  9. eu-mi has taken to the adjustment well and is often perched on the back of the sofa to look out the windows. :)
  10. jody can get more work done for englewood and doesn't have to stress as much about traveling time back and forth between school and the church.

our man-dog


i just wanted to share this picture with you... because it's absolutely hilarious to me. our dog eu-mi is such a funny thing. she has taken to randomly standing on her hind legs as she waits for us - to throw her a ball, to feed her, to do anything... it is an expression of ultimate waiting. jody and i have taken to calling her 'man-dog', because she's started doing things a human should do. like open and close doors with her nose, open up cabinets... and now stand on her hind legs. it's ridiculous.

i love the euminator, and if you got to hang out with her, i know you would, too.

Stef's Visit



Last week was a very exciting time, because my dear friend, Stefanie came to visit me and Jody. Now why is Stefanie so special, do you ask? Stefanie is special for more reasons that I can think of, but the first that comes to mind is that Stefanie has seen me struggle over several years and she still loves me. Stefanie was one of my first friends in Korea. We met in early 2006 at an English ministry of a large church in Migeum station, about 15 minutes drive from Suji, where we both lived.

As I thought about our history, I realized we have been through a lot together and kept in touch even when apart. (Move your mouse over the following paragraph, and you will be able to click on the links to see when I wrote about those experiences on this blog.) 

We were friends when Korea was crazy over the World Cup. She encouraged me when I arrived back in Korea for my second year and cried like a baby in her and Brittany's apartment. She was there when Jody and I first met and became friends... and when we went hiking together... and the shirt I'm wearing for my first 'date' with Jody is hers.... Stefanie is also the first person I told when Jody had proposed... we were, after all, heading over to her apartment that Friday evening when Jo popped the question. :) Stefanie was a consolation during our Tuesday night Bible studies, where we confessed struggles, prayed for one another and encouraged each other to keep pressing on. She was there the day of our wedding... and back in Korea when we returned to Korea for my third year. She has celebrated Thanksgiving with me in Korea. She introduced us to Life Church, where we had community and developed wonderful friendships with amazing people. I praise God for Stefanie!

And so, last Tuesday, Stefanie came to Denver and visited Jody and me. Sadly, Jody received a jury summons - and was selected. So he was gone most of Stefanie's visit (bummer!!!), but nonetheless, we girls had a great time together. We ate Korean food together, took a walk to downtown Littleton, visited Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, and visited the Coors Brewery in Golden. It was a wonderful time together, and I praise God for faithful friends like Stef.

once again the house is quiet, and i can think enough to sit down and write. yesterday was good friday, and tomorrow christians all over the world will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. i must say that this year has been a different experience than past celebrations of this wonderful holiday. why? you ask... i have been asking myself this very same question, and after much contemplation, i believe the reason i am so thankful for easter, is because i have a new and greater understanding of my own sinfulness.

at our church i have met many people who have come to the Lord later in life. they grew up without a relationship with the Lord, and after making mess after mess, these people came to the Lord with an obvious awareness of their depravity and their incredible need for the Lord. i, however, came to Jesus as a child. this, i have found, is both a privilege and a challenge. the advantage to this kind of upbringing is that i have been walking with the Lord a long time, and i have seen His hand in me and through me over many, many years (though i am still young). the disadvantage is, i have found, that i can often hold my salvation in contempt. i grow callous to my own sin. i rationalize how my sin isn't as bad as others. spiritual pride isn't as bad as lust. condemnation and arrogance aren't as odious as rebellion and stubbornness. and the list could go on and on.

this past year has been a very humbling experience for me, as seminary has strained our finances and my own faith in the Lord's provision. jody and i have had to work on our communication and ask for forgiveness often - more often than i would have ever imagined. neither of us is close to family, and as i've mentioned before, establishing new friendships is hard work and can be frustrating and discouraging. i think through what i've noticed through all of these struggles is that i can no longer make excuses for my own sin. i am less inclined to want to make excuses for it, or give sin a fancier or more spiritual-sounding name. my sin is just downright ugly and it's just as ugly as others' sin.

so i confess that it is with great joy and humility that i come to the Cross and the Tomb this easter... more so than ever before. i NEED the Cross. i see my need greater and great. without it i am hopelessly lost, and i cling to it with gratitude and a changed heart.

truly, i am a sinner, and i serve a great, great Savior. thank You, Lord for being obedient, even to death on the cross (philippians 2,8).

God's Provision

It's a quiet night here in the Been apartment. Jody is up at Englewood teaching the youth, and I decided to stay home tonight. It is Hump Day, after all, and I'm ever mindful of the need my body has for rest and that if I can't keep my eyes open by 5pm, I might want to be low-key that evening! When I look at others who are able to go and go, and be involved in a million different activities at the same time, I try not to give in to feelings of envy, as I have learned the physical limitations I need to place on my body in order to stay healthy. And I am encouraged; I have not had laryngitis since August 2008. It's been a year and a half!

March of 2010 finds me in a much more encouraged place than a few months ago. In fact, I am more encouraged than I have been in a long time. God has indeed been faithful. The most noticeable place that Jody and I see evidence of God's kindness towards us has been in our church, Englewood Assembly. I recall to mind the place we were in a year ago.

We had arrived in Denver in January 2009, and Jody had begun classes at Denver Seminary. Every weekend we would check out a new church.... for three or four months. It was an exhausting process trying to find a home church, and we often shook our heads as we left a service. Is it possible to miss newcomers when your church is 40 people? And not so much as a smile? A glance? A handshake? A welcome? It was such a discouraging experience trying to get plugged in. And then we went to Englewood one Sunday. I think 20 people must have come up to us, shaken our hand, hugged us and welcomed us above and beyond what I have ever experienced before. And I've been to a lot of different churches. The music was joyful and a great mix of old hymns, new worship and all done with great enthusiasm. Perfection was less important than heart there, we could tell. And the congregation was an odd mix of old (as in... 90 years ago these cats were going to Sunday School in this same building), Hispanic, blue-collar, loud and misfits..... and then us. But we kept going back, because there was such LOVE! After checking out a bazillion churches, Jody and I decided to stay at Englewood, not because it promised a dashing preaching career and big fat retirement checks for Jody, but because of the love in the place. So much LOVE and so much GRACE for sinful wretches like...... well, everybody.

Life last year continued to be stressful as Jody finished one semester of seminary, and then we had to move, and then another semester came and we desperately needed another car... and Jody began to get more involved at Englewood. He started going to the Men's Breakfast on Tuesdays and gradually I could tell he was getting sucked in to the wonderful things God was doing in and through this small body of mostly new believers. And he was wanting to stay longer, go deeper and serve more. God was changing Jody's heart.

I, however, was plugging away at work in another church, and I struggled a bit with feeling like my heart was divided. I wanted to get more involved at Englewood, but I was so busy working at Southeast. I signed up in the summer to start teaching the 3 and 4 year olds on a once-a-month basis, and I was paired up with a young mother named Crystal. At first the teaching process was a bit awkward, but somehow along the line, it wasn't anymore. Gradually, I believe God was changing my heart, too, and I began to feel more comfortable with the women at Englewood. And I began to want to hang out with them - however old they were and no matter how different the stages of life we were in. I think God was giving me a new heart, too, full of love and acceptance!

Another tie developed as Jody was required by Denver Seminary to find two mentors. Jody requested our pastor TJ and a younger man in the congregation named Matt to be his mentors, and they both agreed. Though the mentoring process through Denver Seminary is a bit cumbersome, Jody and I are in the agreement that it has proven to be a good thing. It has allowed Jody to show himself consistent and serious about learning the work that goes behind ministry in a church, and it has required of him discipline in spending time with these men. As Jody has spent time with them, I have seen him grow in his love for this particular body and in his wisdom in how to help grow this body in a healthy way.

And so, after doing our best to show ourselves faithful in committing to serve and love this particular body, in February the Lord showed Himself merciful and wonderfully creative towards us. The elder board offered Jody and me the church parsonage, a small duplex next to the church building, as a place for us to live in as compensation for the greater level of responsibility that Jody will be assuming in the church, especially in the grow part of the church's mission statement love, grow, share. Jody and I are thrilled! We have chosen to accept this amazing gift from the Lord, and we will be moving in the end of April. This offer is so wonderful, because it is going to be a blessing to us and to the church, and it will definitely make church involvement that much easier.

Jody and I have no idea what the future holds for us, but we can definitely see the hand of God guiding us, and though sometimes it feels like we are aimless, at times like this we are so encouraged to know that indeed, God is faithful and He is gently holding our hands and leading us by His Spirit. We praise Him for His kindness and faithfulness!

random thoughts
  1. steve, my boss, heads to burma on saturday and will be gone for a week. i am curious to hear what his thoughts are about the country when he gets back.
  2. my friend stefanie is booking her ticket to come visit us in april. i miss stefanie. i'm excited to see her.
  3. eu-mi was spastic last night, when sam and britt brought rustie over. i think being cooped up inside made her go crazy. intense dislike for her lack of restraint.
  4. i'm fighting a cold. tired. eyes hurt. draining. must not lose my voice.
  5. have decided that maybe colorado is not good for me. or maybe it's just winter weather. hard to fight discouragement and depression when it's always grey, gloomy and cold outside.
  6. i have this dashboard jesus sitting on my desk... won it in a white elephant gift exchange. it's slightly sacreligious but OH so funny. haven't gotten the courage to put it anywhere, though. what would you recommend?? :)
  7. i am not a good event coordinator. i hate major planning and volunteer/detail coordination. it stresses me so much my stomach shakes and gets sick. *sigh*
  8. jody made the most wonderful stew dinner last night. i am continually amazed by his brilliant and creative cooking skills. i praise God for him.
  9. it snowed last night, but i decided to wear my black flats to work anyway. that meant i was running around my car scraping and sweeping snow off my car... all the while the freezing cold snow was getting in my shoes and freezing my toes (thankfully it was only a couple of inches deep). i just didn't care. lol.
  10. been meditating on this verse from lamentations: "I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
1 Corinthians 9:24-27

This was the theme for the past month's sermon series at church. As everyone sets New Year's resolutions and goals for the next year, our pastor TJ encouraged our church to be focused, to set eternal goals and to run the race of life with our eyes fixed on Jesus. It is also interesting, because this passage can now also be applied to the physical conditioning in my life. At my job, there is a financial incentive at the end of the calendar year if an individual tracks his/her exercise throughout the year.

The details are basically: varying amounts of exercise qualify for 1 point, 3 points or 5 points. For example, walking for 15+ minutes a day counts for 1 point. Running on the treadmill for 30 minutes a day counts for 3 points and running a half-marathon counts for 5 points. Any kind of exercise could count towards it, though - helping a friend move, riding horses, hiking, or swimming laps; really, the goal is just to get the staff members to get their heart rates up and their bodies in shape. There's a little disparity between the points, I feel, but I am willing to do the exercise to qualify for the 1 or 3 points, so I figure I won't quibble over details. And besides, I pretty much exercise on a semi-regular basis anyway. So this incentive is enough for me to just track my efforts and to work out more consistently, which has been my desire for a long time. In short, I must exercise enough to earn more at least 30 points each month for 12 months in order to earn the bonus at the end of the year.

As of today (February 2nd), I have turned in my Exercise tracker for the month of January, and yesterday I ran... so 3 points for me! Woohoo! Jody is teasing me that I sound like I'm in Weight Watchers, but I don't care. It feels good to hold myself accountable, and I am enjoying the challenge to stay in shape.

As I run, bike, use the elliptical, lift weights or just take a walk with Eu-mi, I am reminded that exercise takes focus, discipline, perseverance and lots of prayer. I am also reminded that things in the physical realm always mirror what is happening in the spiritual. The same principles apply in my walk with the Lord. May He give me (and you!) the strength, self-discipline and grace to run the race that is set before me.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race that is marked out for us.

with some warm peppermint tea nearby, i wanted to settle in a bit and write a blog. it's been a while. how are you, friend? i feel like it's been a long time since i have been able to catch up with those i love, and i just wanted to say, 'i miss you.' we should catch up sometime. call me! or i'll call you.... probably around 4:15 MST during the week, because that's when i'm driving home from work and i have some time to say hello. :)

january 2010 is here... and i am realizing the month is well over half-way done. how can that be? it was just the new year! so now i am stopping to write before another day passes and we're already into 2011. to those i love, happy new year. i pray it is a good year for you and that God reveals His great love for you in a new and deeper way this year.

as i take stock of what this year holds, i confess my greatest joy is that 2010 is NOT 2009. is that bad? should i feel guilty for being so glad a season is OVER?! when i look back on last year, there are so many wonderful things that happened. jody and i settled in colorado, we got a puppy that we love dearly, (and want to strangle occasionally) and jody was able to successfully complete half of his master's degree at denver seminary. we found a wonderful church, where we are getting involved in and jody has developed great friendships with his mentors. at various points in the past year we were able to spend several days exploring the mountains and seeing how amazing our God is in beautiful creation.

and then there is the big 'HOWEVER'. i will also not lie. it has been a trying year. a year of laying foundations. and laying foundations is always hard, because there is no shortcut. there is no way to speed up the process. getting settled and acclimated to the workload that seminary requires takes time. finding the right church to settle into, join and start serving in takes time and much prayer. finding a job in this economy takes much prayer, faith and time. and making lasting friends (and discerning who best to invest time in) takes prayer, time and great faith! so when i look back on 2009, it was a year that took great faith and time.

this morning as i was reading in ecclesiastes, i was meditating on the fact that there is a time and season for everything. and thankfully, seasons come and go. as much as change is hard for me, and i dread sitting in a season that seems to be in flux, i take comfort that 'this too shall pass'. God is on the throne, and this season will not last forever. i especially felt that when jody completed this past semester. when that last exam was taken and final grades started coming in, i felt a release in my heart. i felt like a major milestone had been accomplished. last year was tough and required a lot of putting out without a lot of receiving. but that's what a foundation is. and it is laid with the expectation that in due season it will reap a harvest.

i don't know what 2010 holds, but i am full of hope and praying that God brings joy. i need joy in this season. so that is my prayer. God, give me joy in the midst of this season in my life, and help me to be faithful in laying the foundation You are calling me to. I do pray that, in due season, Jody and I will reap a harvest that brings You glory. Amen.
