after the palace, mrs. kim and yoo left carlos to show lauren and me around seoul. carlos was an invaluable guide, since he goes to seoul most weekends and can communicate in korean enough for us to avoid getting into major jams. we went to a little restaurant and lauren and i shared spicy chicken that was just a little too spicy for me. we continued to navigate the city via subway.
joy of all joys, i saw a starbucks!! (please go to lauren's blog to see a picture of me in front of it: http://pics.livejournal.com/lauren_wenger/gallery/0000b4f3 ... lol) we went to a baskin-robbins (they are all over the place, and for some reason full of pictures of drew berrymore as the advertising model. how random is that?) i bought a pink parasol-esque umbrella in one of the traditional markets (woohooo!), and it totally saved me after carlos and lauren had already left, while mrs. kim and i tried to figure out how to get back to suji amidst the downpour. we took a taxi (my first!), waited in the rain for an hour at the samsang bus station (where i taught her the difference between the short /a/ 'apple' and short /e/ 'elephant' sounds) , and took a 40 minute ride back to suji and my beloved apartment...

after all the walking and trying to absorb everything, i was exhausted. still, for my first time in a major asian capital city, i truly enjoyed my time!
